Black Magic 18, 1950
Black Magic was one of Jack Kirby's big golden age projects with Joe Simon -
some of his other projects: creating Captain America for Timely Comics and
starting the romance comic craze with Young Romance (which, like Black Magic,
was also published by Prize).
This cover isn't in Gerber's Photo-Journal so it's not very well known among collectors, but it sure is odd - and a real beauty!
Underwater scenes can be hard to pull off, but this one really gives a feeling of being below the surface, which is even more of an accomplishment given the absolutely bizarre and hallucinogenic colors! The coloring is really remarkable - bright pinks, greens, orange, brown, and blues are mixed in an unnatural but intense composition. The effect might not work for everyone but I think it's very cool!
