Vault of Horror 32, 1953
This cover (and the related story inside) are a rare example of obvious self-censorship in the pre-Comics Code days. The original artwork featured a butcher's knife protruding from the walking corpse's head. However, the publishers opted to have the artwork printed with a rather odd "starburst" in place of the knife. This attempt at self-censorship seems to have had little effect other than ruining an otherwise wonderfully gory story, public backlash against comics of this type soon resulted in the institution of the Comics Code.
