Atomic War 1, 1952

Atomic War 1, 1952

Published by Ace Periodicals. This cover has... a nuclear bomb. A mushroom cloud. And Manhattan being devestated. I think it is Manhattan because I recognize the Chrysler Building in the foreground and I'm pretty sure that is the Empire State Building in the background. Fear of New York City being nuked was common during the Cold War. "Duck and Cover" was the standard warning for schoolchildren at the time and comics like this were for sale at the newsstand.

The cover art does not show any signatures and there is no concensus among collectors and comic historians. My best guess is Ogden Whitney or maybe Ken Rice. The main story in this issue is "The Sneak Attack" by Ken Rice. There is also "Berlin Powderkeg" drawn by Lou Cameron and "Counterattack!" drawn by Bill Molno. This issue also has a two-page text story and a 1/3 page contest feature.
